4 or 5 MagiciansGenre: indie rock
4 or 5 Magicians are Dan, Matt, Jon, and Mike, four early-twentysomethings from Brighton. Unlike any other British band of note of recent years, they take main (but by no means sole) influence from the golden age of American alt-rock, great bands like Pavement, The Pixies, REM, Guided By Voices, Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr, and Nirvana. In Autumn 2005 Dan had some songs in his head so he borrowed Jon's 8-track recorder and demoed what was to become the '4 or 5 Songs' EP, recorded in June 2006, and unleashed onto the internet to a whirlwind of label interest.

A Scandal in BohemiaGenre: electronica elizabethan song
Formed by Composer Elizabeth Walling in 2006, A Scandal in Bohemia are: Elizabeth Walling, Dan Leavers, Ed Briggs, Thom Punton, Maxwell Hallett and James Barton. They all studied classical music together at Sussex Uni from 2003 - 2006. They each contribute a unique and versatile musical style to their partly-improvised performances, ranging from early and classical music, to jazz and rock which creates a sound that was recently described as "…someone searching for a station on a Thirties radio" (The Argus, April, 2007).

As a full band, A Scandal in Bohemia have done a handful of shows to date, but thanks to some excellent local support they have had already the chance to perform with some excellent, international musicians and bands, including God Speed you Black Emperor's spin off: Thee Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra la la band (Komedia, April 2007) and, Frank Chickens: a bizarre Japanese Cabaret act who were massive in the 80s (and a favourite of John Peel to boot), (Komedia, 2 August 2007).

Absent ElkGenre: Indie
Absent Elk have been together around 18 months, after the instrumental core of the band found Kjetil at a local Beer Festival in Shoreham. The others had already heard a home-recorded demo of his acoustic solo work, so they immediately dragged him to a rehearsal room (straight from the festival, and a bit tipsy).

The band began by playing him an instrumental piece, expecting him to just sit and listen, but having heard it once, he immediately asked for a mic and sang a hooky vocal melody for the whole song.

Ben GriffithGenre: singer/songwriter
Drawing from a plethora of influences, Ben conjures melodies reminiscent of the Beach Boys or the Smiths, strung with lyrics that combine the heartfelt emotion of Counting Crows with the wry honesty of Beck. These qualities are underscored by a sense of truth, of depth to his thoughts and ideas that raise his songs up from the ranks of his peers.

Live, he presents a delectable range of possibilities. Switching effortlessly from the role of solo troubadour to that of front-man, his songs shine throughout. Guitar and voice merge in a soft, chilled out style of his own, sweetly tempting you in. Other thoughts and troubles drift away as his songs evoke memories of the joyous leap and swell of new love; of nights lost to alcohol and great ideals; of the cauterising ache of a broken heart.

Drookit DogsGenre: folky rock
Born simultaneously at the bottom of a well Drookit Dogs very quickly learned how to put up with each other's dank and swampy stench. A lack of education meant they had to communicate in other ways, so as soon as Tom began tapping on the walls Matt began to make strange noises with his pondscum-coated vocal chords. Whitey collected the hair that fell from their drenched prune-like skin and combined it with an old piece of driftwood that had miraculously appeared. As a result he invented a device which made low bowel-rumbling notes when he plucked it. The well acted like a speaker and very soon people travelled from miles around to hear this alien sound which erupted like a pus-filled boil from the darkness of the well. Eventually the king demanded that this sound be given a face, so a swat team was sent in to recover these three amorphous beings and place them on a bandstand. When they emerged it turned out they were not human but in fact canine (in a sense) and the lack of sunlight had inspired a new breed; they walked on their hind legs and had an inherent ability to play their very own brand of polk music. The king awarded them all with instruments and set them loose...

End of Level BaddieGenre: indie
End Of Level Baddie have been making indie/alt-punk noise since they formed in Brighton in the summer of 2005. James (Vocals, Guitar), Joe (Drums) and Luke (Bass) met in Ashby de-la Zouch…that hotbed of new musical activity that has recently given rise to The Young Knives…and began performing as a three piece punk outfit, playing their maiden gigs in local pubs and then at the Edinburgh Festival. Joe and James moved to Brighton after taking places at the University and eventually formed End Of Level Baddie after re-uniting with Luke and his musical partner-in-crime Dan (Keyboards).
The ‘Baddies recorded some initial limited-release demos in 2006, sparking a devoted local following and some label interest, but the band weren’t satisfied with the material and are only now recording their first demos proper, due to be completed sometime in August 2007.

There is a tangible excitement in the audience at Floors and Walls gigs, and that’s because people know they are seeing the start of something important. “I think the best music happens when you combine polar opposites,” explains guitarist Dom McNulty, “We sound a bit like the Arctic Monkeys on speed!” Dom had previously played with Adam Shamp (drums) and Ian Booth (bass), but the band didn’t gel until they jammed with Alex.

We are, and we are not, Girls From Egypt - an unusual misnomer
if you ever saw one, but one that represents this band of four girls/guys with a potent penchant for mezmerising danceable beats, meandering but pounding basslines, sharp, fractuous vocals and frenzied, chaotic guitar work. Megalomaniac Spanish pro-capitalism rants, bloodied guitar strings, jerky movements and stream of consciousness lyrics also feature heavily, but a fundamental theme of being catchy and inventive is always lurking in the background; couple this with a dislike of overly elaborate haircuts, military jackets and pointy shoes and you’re nearly there. Glass EyeGenre: rock
GlassEye are the latest incarnation of a musical project that began some 2 decades ago in Brighton. Singer/bassplayer Johnny F and guitarist Henry Lockyer, aka Heinrich von Hellovitch, began working together in a band called 'Brother Bullshit' which after a number of personnel mutations, and a few personal mutations, became the three-piece Dog Hunch with Steve Krill on drums.

With a band name inspired by Charles Bukowski, midnight hauntings by the spirits of Tom Waits and Beefheart, and music described by one early reviewer as "metal-edged new age Birthday Party / Stump / Pop Group - with teeth" the original Dog Hunch was the gritty kernel at the heart of GlassEye.

Gloria CyclesGenre: indie pop
Gloria Cycles have something in common with The Go Betweens here, in that they are within touching distance of perfect pop. OF COURSE there is The Sound Of Young Scotland in there, with Postcard’s holy trinity of Orange Juice, Aztec Camera and Josef K jostling for position. Confident, charismatic and somehow subdued but incredibly intense on stage, the band have also been compared to ‘The Lovin Spoonful’, ‘The Magic Numbers’ and in some extremes ‘The Velvet Underground’.

Heels Catch FireGenre: indie
Not a Brighton Band, but a band from Brighton. Heels Catch Fire came
together in 2006 by an organic process, no small ads, no stand-ins, just
shared musical influences and common ambitions.
Perfectionists through and through, Heels Catch Fire emerged from the
studio after 6 months with a tight sound and flawless melodies, rapidly
gaining support with the likes of the Bromheads Jacket, Reverend and the
Makers, 9 black alps, and with headlining gigs at Brighton Ocean Rooms
(with Belle and Sebastian DJ's) and at London's 93 feet east.
Their sound derives from a wide range of influences from the Police, the
Beastie Boys through to the Decembrists. Heels Catch Fire inject a fresh
raw energy into their live shows. Dale's staccato precision on drums
underpins the twin guitars of Elliot and Laura, a powerful yet delicate
blend set to Mike's measured and forceful bass lines . Elliot’s rich and
angstful vocals form an intensively tight and measured sound.
Going from strength to strength, the band will be back on the road this
autumn showcasing their newly recorded material.

I Say MarvinGenre: electro indie
Citing influences as diverse as The Gang of Four, The Flaming Lips and “all things electro!”, I Say Marvin, tired of the po-faced blatherings of their contempories, set out their dance floor manifesto/agenda with a withering combination of wit and drama – lyrically incisive, musically irresistible.

Ian HelliwellGenre: Electronica
After playing guitar, bass and drums in his own groups during the 1980s, Ian`s interest in electronic music led to experimentation at the start of the 1990s, with building and modifying 9v circuitry. He has gone on to construct a range of Hellitron sound generators, all housed in uniquely customised boxes, and used to make the soundtracks to all his super-8 films. His self-built machines 'The Megatherm' and 'Hellioptical', are light sensitive instruments which react to specially made super-8 films to generate electronic sound. In November 2005 he constructed his first basic synth - the 'Hellisizer 1000', built from a modified electronic percussion circuit.
Working closely with different organisations, including Avanto Media Arts Festival, LUX, Brighton’s Cinematheque, and the Norwegian Short Film Festival, Ian has consistently explored experimental film and music through a mixture of programmes and events.
